Sony has partnered with market-leading 3D World magazine to create the ultimate stereoscopic-3D (S-3D) film competition; giving both professional and amateur filmmakers the opportunity to showcase their work at this year’s SIGGRAPH, present their work to millions of Sony BRAVIA 3D TV purchasers and receive global industry acclaim. The competition opens today and will run until July 2010.
“As the market leader in all aspects of the 3D value chain, from Lens to Living Room, and with a rich heritage in the filming, production and distribution of 3D cinema classics, Sony is committed to helping existing and emerging 3D Film making talent. By working with Future’s 3D World in print and online, we will be deploying a full range of technology advice, tips and mentoring opportunities for entrants,” said Nick Sharples, Sony Europe.
The competition launches today with dedicated tutorials and feature content designed to educate readers about all aspects of S-3D filmmaking. The magazine includes features on the rules of S-3D and top tips on using 3D to enhance a story and the pitfalls to avoid. The 16-page section ends with a detailed tutorial on how to create a stereoscopic camera rig in a range of popular 3D software applications.
To support the competition, a microsite (www.3dworldmag.com/sonycompetition) has been developed which features video tutorials, regular news updates from the 3D community, exclusive behind-the-scenes content from Sony experts, interviews from enthusiasts at the cutting edge of 3D and, last but not least, the chance to speak to directors and film makers with one-off Q&As.
Fiona Tully, Publisher of 3D World for Future, the special-interest media group said, “3D World has been a core part of the 3D community for ten years and is the perfect partner for Sony in its quest for top-quality stereoscopic 3D content. Our readers want to push the boundaries of what they can do with animation, motion graphics and visual effects and are committed to improving their knowledge and skills to stay ahead of the curve. I’ve no doubt they’ll relish the chance to showcase their talents on a global stage”.
The competition will be supported by regular social media updates from Sony and 3D World, to ensure 3D filmmakers and fans alike are kept up to date with the latest news. Twitter, Facebook and YouTube profiles will all be used to ensure a regular flow of 3D news. Filmmakers can express their interest in taking part in the competition either through 3D World magazine or its website (www.3dworldmag.com), both of which will offer regular updates and guidance on making the most of the contest.
A live judging event will take place in early July and the winner will be announced at SIGGRAPH on 25th July.
